Once the pulp/nerve tissue is damaged or exposed,it further breaks down and bacteria begin to multiply in the pulp chamber causing an infection or abscessed tooth. Root Canal Treatment procedure :

A root canal treatment usually requires one or more visits depending on the amount of infection. The first step in the procedure is to examine and take an x-ray to determine the extent of damage and if there are any signs of infection in the surrounding bone.

Local anaesthetic is then used to numb the area near the tooth. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed and an opening is made on the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using small instruments also known as files, the infected pulp is removed and the canals are flushed and cleaned.

In cases there is more infection and just the cleaning of the canals is not enough, medication is put inside the tooth to clear it up. If the root canal is not completed on the same day, a temporary filling is placed in the exterior hole in the tooth to keep out contaminants like saliva and food between appointments.

Before the canals are permanently sealed and filled, the canals should be completely clean, devoid of all the infection and dried properly. In the next appointment, to fill the interior canals of the tooth, a sealer paste and a rubber compound known as gutta-percha is placed into the canal. The final step is the restoration of the exterior hole on the tooth.

A root canal treated tooth is often requires a large filling. Hence,a crown is placed on the tooth to protect it, prevent it from breaking and restore it to full function.
